Don’t be a Bunny this Easter: Lort Smith urges action on pet safety plans

Lort Smith Animal Hospital is calling on all pet families to map out a comprehensive Easter pet safety plan this year to keep pets out of emergency animals hospital wards.

Lort Smith Veterinarian, Dr James McGregor, said a five-point safety plan was essential in making sure our pets stay safe this year and planning should commence immediately to address the following:

1.Food management

Keep chocolate, hot cross buns (raisins/sultanas), xylitol-sweetened treats, alcohol, and fatty table scraps out of reach, as these are highly toxic.

2. Decorations and plants

Avoid bringing lilies into the home, as they are highly toxic to cats. Keep plastic Easter grass and small toys out of reach to prevent choking, intestinal blockages, or poisoning.

3. Stress and Routine

Maintaining a predictable routine—such as keeping regular feeding and walking times—is crucial for reducing anxiety, while providing a quiet “safe zone” away from celebrations helps pets manage stress.

4. Easter Egg Hunts

Keep pets in a separate, safe area during the hunt. Count the eggs before hiding them and ensure all are found afterward.

5. Prepare for Emergency

Know the location and phone number of your nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic. Ensure pets are microchipped and wearing ID tags in case they escape during any celebrations.

‘’By planning for these hazards, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for your pets,’’ said Dr McGregor.

‘’We would also advise against surprising people with a bunny as a gift for Easter. All pets need to be loved and not an impulse gift for Easter.’’
