Lort Smith has a philosophy that we will never euthanise an animal that is capable of being rehomed, no matter how long it takes. The Adoption Centre team ensures that animals find the best home for their needs.
Every year the Adoption Centre will find homes for around 600 animals, including approximately 500 cats, 80 dogs and 20 pocket pets. Many animals we rehome also require significant and expensive veterinary treatments. This is an important part of Lort Smith’s charity work in caring and treating animals, and never giving up on an animal, which can mean thousands of dollars spent on care.
This care is only possible with the support from wonderful members of the community – our greatest thanks to all those who give so generously to Lort Smith.

Why adopt from Lort Smith
Our no-euthanasia, welfare-first policy
Choosing to adopt through Lort Smith means you’re supporting a long-standing Melbourne organisation dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible rehoming. Our policy: we will never euthanise an animal capable of being rehomed, no matter how long it takes. Every dog, cat and small pet receives the medical care, behavioural support and time they need before becoming available for adoption.
Benefits of adoption compared to buying
Adoption offers a meaningful alternative to purchasing a pet. When you adopt with us, you benefit from:
- Animals that are already health-checked, vaccinated, desexed, and microchipped
- Support and guidance from our adoption team to help you choose the right pet
- You’re helping animals in need and reducing the demand for pets bred for sale.
Supporting animal welfare in Melbourne
By adopting from Lort Smith, you help protect vulnerable pets, relieve pressure on the shelter system, and support long-term welfare efforts in Melbourne. We operate under high standards of animal welfare and follow the guidelines in the Victorian code for shelter care.
