Tales to Tails; inspiring the next generation of animal lovers

Research right around the world has shown that reading to animals improves confidence and motivation and now Lort Smith is bringing the experience to youngsters at its Campbellfield site.

Partnering with Hume City Council Libraries, Tales for Tails offers free 30-minute sessions for children to practice reading aloud to the adorable cats and kittens at our Adoption Centre.

Lort Smith Spokesperson Suzana Talevski said the program was trailed last year for children aged between 5-12 with amazing results and is now a permanent initiative.

‘’Our shelter animals benefited greatly from the extra socialisation and human interaction, making them more comfortable and, in many cases, more adoptable,’’ said Ms Talevski.

‘’The positive effects extended beyond the animals; the children’s confidence, motivation, and literacy skills flourished as they interacted with their nonjudgmental audience.’’

Tales to Tails encourages a love of reading, but most importantly, fosters empathy and helps find loving forever homes for our feline friends—a win-win situation for our cats and the children.

‘’At Lort Smith, we are dedicated to enhancing the lives of both animals and humans. Reading to pets promotes emotional connection and comfort, as kids share their favourite stories. This interaction fosters empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the human-animal bond,’’ said Ms Talevski.

The sessions will run on Thursdays from 4pm right out the first school term. To book head over to the Hume Libraries app/website and click under event or phone (03) 9356 6900.
