Lort Smith Animal Hospital hoping for a quiet Easter
More pets visit Lort Smith Animal Hospital’s emergency department during public holidays compared to non public holidays and Easter is no different.
This Easter, Lort Smith Animal Hospital is hoping for a quieter time in the ED.
Lort Smith Animal Hospital Veterinarian, Dr James McGregor, said early preparation was the key to avoiding a hospital visit this Easter.
‘’Easter can be a busy time for everyone with festivities happening so the opportunity for a mishap involving your pet is significant but not unavoidable,’’ said Dr McGregor.
‘’Planning is the key and knowing pets can be quite opportunistic and cunning when they think a yummy treat is up for grabs.’’
Dr James said although chocolate was the most common risk to dogs at Easter, others dangers exist and can be just as toxic.
‘’Hot cross buns are a big no-no for your furry friends. Fresh and dried grapes are highly toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause a range of health problems, from diarrhoea and vomiting, to more severe incidences which could lead to kidney failure,’’ said Dr James.
‘’It’s important to keep food away from the edge of benches or tables as many pooches won’t be able to resist the temptation of jumping up to get to what they perceive is a yummy treat but in fact can be potentially life threatening.’’
Dr McGregor notes that cats are also at risk during Easter and especially when it comes to certain flowers.
‘’Please use extreme caution when bringing in flowers, bouquets, and new plants into your cat-friendly household. Easter lilies are extremely poisonous to cats, and just one leaf (or even the pollen) can kill a cat. Even small ingestions can result in severe kidney failure,’’ said Dr McGregor.”
