We saw a little warrior

We are only able to assist animals like Ayla because of the generous donations we receive. Help us continue our important work caring for sick, injured and vulnerable animals.

Ayla is a perfect example of the many ways we assist animals. At just nine weeks old, Ayla the German shepherd x husky was surrendered to Lort Smith with multiple fractures to her right jaw and cheek, including damage to her eye socket.

Her injuries from being dropped were shocking. The prognosis for a good surgical outcome was very low. A further concern was the displacement of her teeth. There was a chance that a symmetrical functional jaw closure could not be recreated from an injury so serious.

An initial surgery carried out by Dr Warren, a head veterinarian, involved numerous pins and plates being inserted to support the jaw bone. They were held in place with an external fixture.

This technique is usually only considered for the most severe of fractures. In good news, Dr Warren was able to achieve facial symmetry. However, Ayla unfortunately succumbed to an infection and required further surgeries to remove necrotic bone fragments, an abscess and protruding teeth.

In total, six surgeries were performed, including pin removal. Ayla showed incredible strength and resilience throughout her healing journey – she even learnt how to open her mouth on command!

Ayla has grown into a beautifully behaved and well socialised girl. Following a detailed treatment plan including medication, rehabilitation and foster care, Lort Smith rehomed Ayla to an adoring family who relocated to a bigger house to accommodate her and big fur-brother Harley.

‘We remember our first meet and greet with Ayla like it was yesterday. We came to the Adoption Centre eager to see her, but more than that, eager for Ayla to choose us. We were told that we would go for a walk together. She appeared from around the corner, so small for her age, seemingly so fragile, but as soon as she came closer, we saw a little warrior.

She showed so much trust in the Lort Smith staff. Knowing the extent of her injuries, this level of trust could only come from love, ongoing care and true compassion. Not only was she given a second chance in life, she was given all the attention needed for her to thrive.

We saw this attention over and over again from every member of Lort Smith – from nurses to doctors to adoption centre staff. Ayla became part of our family – cheeky, intelligent, funny: she knows no fear!

She loves running around, chasing birds and her big fur-brother. She is a free spirit – happiest after a sprint, a play or a bout of zoomies. Ayla’s happiness is contagious: she is our sunshine, we are so grateful she chose us to be her family.’ – Anna & Didier
